Advisory Council

The PSHE Association has an elected Advisory Council to support, guide and inform the work of the Association on behalf of its members. The Advisory Council is made up of 12 members plus the Chair. In this first year with the new governance structure, we have retained a core of seven members from our Interim Council.

The PSHE Association Advisory Council supports the Board of Trustees in its governance function and has an important role to play in reflecting the views of the membership and influencing the direction and development of the organisation.

Gill Morris-CHAIR

Gill Morris is the Strategy Manager for Children and Young People’s Personal Development and Well Being in the London Borough of Camden. She is responsible for a team that covers PSHE and Citizenship, Healthy Schools, Learning Mentors, Sexual Health Education and School Sports Partnership. She has the lead for PSHE and Citizenship, Primary and Secondary SEAL and Healthy Schools. She supports all schools and PRUs through training, policy and curriculum development, project development, advice and guidance. Prior to this Gill was a PSHE and Citizenship Advisory Teacher for 15 years. She was also seconded to the DfES for 5 years as the PSHE Adviser.

Ruth Kerry
Ruth started teaching in 1975 and became Head of Religious Studies at Woodlands School, Derby. Since 1986, she has been the coordinator of PSHE/Careers Education Guidance at Derby Moor Community Sports College. In 2003 she became an AST in Careers Education Guidance, developing teaching and learning in CEG and PSHE in a variety of schools. She has delivered training on Drug Education, SRE, Personal Safety, and coaches individual staff.  Ruth has experience of tutor and specialist team delivery of PSHE, and believes that PSHE should be as active and experiential as possible.

Geraldine Green
Geraldine is the Head of PSHE/Citizenship at Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys where she has been teaching for fourteen years. Recently, she obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Management Development and last year, successfully completed the programme for Certification in PSHE. Most of Geraldine’s background is in managing the Gifted and Talented provisions in school.She is now keen to extend her expertise into PSHE. Her school has recently applied for Healthy School status and she is the coordinator. Geraldine is keen to be involved in establishment of a teacher support network in the Kent area.  “I feel very privileged and honoured to be part of the Association and look forward to helping shape the future programme for PSHE.”

Peter Bone

Peter is the PSHE/Citizenship coordinator in an 11-16 Comprehensive School in Nottingham, where he has worked for the past twenty years. He is also a Year Head. Peter has been involved in teaching PSHE since the days when it was just called "Soc. Ed," and seen it become more personal, more healthy, more citizen-like.  “ I am delighted that there is now a subject association to represent PSHE, and excited to be part of the Interim Council which will help to get it established. I am looking forward to working with colleagues who contribute towards PSHE, and hope that I will be able to help to represent the interests of teachers working in schools.”

Jan Goulstone
Jan started her career as a language teacher in a large urban comprehensive school. She was also a form tutor to a mixed ability, mixed age group.  “I had to teach PSHE with no training or experience but I realised how important it was to help my pupils develop their skills and knowledge.”   Jan is now a senior adviser for PSHE and Citizenship in a London borough  She is a PSHE lead and has successfully run the CPD course in the borough. She is also the Healthy School Programme coordinator, working with a wide range of other professionals.  She has regular contact with pupils in schools in all phases. For four years Jan was chair of the National Healthy Education Group.

Tony Bennett
Tony is Head of PSHE at Wolverhampton Grammar School. As well as being a practicing teacher he has an academic background in PSHE and continues to be an active researcher. From its inception, he has been a member of the management group of the Wolverhampton Healthy Schools scheme and has also been involved with training other teachers.  “I believe that all young people should have an entitlement to the benefits that PSHE can bring to them.”

David Hart
David is a primary trained, former secondary teacher and now youth worker. Having returned from teaching into advisory work David is very interested in the part the student voice can play- not just in consulting on PSHE but in involving young people as partners in shaping the curriculum to meet the needs of their future.

Karen Thomson
Karen has been an AST for four years, working across all key stages in Torbay, Devon to improve learning and teaching in PSHE, supporting the aims of the National Healthy Schools standard. She runs workshops and INSET for teachers and successful young person-led PSHE forums. She is also working to develop SEAL in local primary schools.

Alice Hoyle
Alice is the Head of PSHE education at Highlands School, North London. She has been commited to PSHE education in particular sexual health since she worked in Africa on an HIV/AIDS prevention project. Following on from that she was frustrated to discover she could not train as a PSHE teacher and had to train as a science teacher instead before specialising in PSHE education in her first job. She has led the school through various projects including developing their SRE programme and policy, Healthy Schools status application, tackling homophobic bullying. Having completed her PSHE certificate, Alice is now working on a Masters in Professional Practice in PSHE (with Sexual Health), as well as being seconded for two days per month to work as a Regional Subject Adviser for PSHE and the new secondary curriculum. Alice is commited to raising the status of PSHE and supporting teachers in its delivery as she passionately believes that the wellbeing of young people should be at the heart of everything we do within education.

Pauline Starr
Pauline is a PSHCE Consultant and Healthy Schools Lead for Newcastles Children’s Services team. Her experience in the area of Personal Social and Health Education is extensive. She taught and managed PSHE for many years. Now holds a local authority post as PSHE and Healthy Schools coordinator (now PSHE consultant and Healthy Schools lead) She has led training on curriculum and policy issues as well as produced and written resources. Job title and terminology has changed over time but her commitment to and passion in PSHE has remained constant

Jane Hyland

Jane works as a PSHE/Healthy Schools Consultant for Nottingham City Childrens’ Services. As well as 11 years experience supporting colleagues in schools with their PSHE planning and development she also has 8 years experience as a teacher of Biology, Science and PSHE in a Nottingham secondary school. Jane is currently a Regional Subject Adviser for PSHE for the new secondary curriculum in the East Midlands. Jane is also qualified as a local trainer for School Councils UK.

Helen Roberts
Helen is a Teacher Adviser for Healthy Schools/PSHE in Worcestershire. After training and teaching in Hertfordshire, she moved to Gloucestershire. It was here her passion for improving the status, quality and impact of PSHE began. After completing the National CPD Programme, she was seconded as a Leading Teacher for PSHE.  After eight years as a successful primary practitioner, she recently became a Teacher Adviser for PSHE and Healthy Schools in Worcestershire, where, amongst other responsibilities, she facilitates the National PSHE CPD programme. "I wish to work strategically with members and other organisations to improve the quality of learning and teaching in PSHE. "
