Update on PSHE CPD programme

31 January 2007

The PSHE Continuing Professional Development programme is currently in Phase 4 and participants, teachers, community nurses and national assessors said goodbye to 2006 with interim submission of  their portfolios.  These colleagues are now preparing for their final Submission of portfolios which takes place in April/May of this year.

We welcomed 2007 with regional meetings which were held around the country. These were for the leads of the programme and they were introduced to members of the new managing agent, VTES. VTES will manage and develop the national programme from September 2007 when Phase 5 officially commences.

Further information on the programme.

9 February 2007

For the last 4 years, the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the Department of Health (DH) have been responsible for the PSHE CPD programme, for teachers and community nurses teaching and supporting the delivery of PSHE.    The programme will be entering a new phase under the management of VT Education and Skills from September 2007.

Building on the consultation exercise over the summer and in preparation for Phase 5 a number of revisions to the programme have been proposed.  These include:

  • Accreditation of the programme by Roehampton University at HE levels 1 (foundation degree) to HE levels 4 (masters degree).  Teachers and community nurses will normally access the programme at level 3 and on successful completion automatically receive 30 credits.  If the participant so wishes they can then do an additional piece of work to gain credits at level 4 and receive 20 credits.
  • Piloting the expansion of the programme to include other professionals who make a sustained and planned contribution to PSHE curriculum planning and delivery in a range of settings
  • A new optional extension module on emotional health and well-being as part of Dimension B
  • Greater status placed on the observation component of the assessment
  • Broadening the focus from the individual to improving PSHE provision in schools and a range of settings.

A document [PDF 120Kb] has been produced outlining the basis of the programme, including aims, content, learning outcomes, assessment and accreditation. An FAQ’s [PDF 32Kb] document has also been prepared. This documentation will be supplemented in time by ‘handbooks’ for those delivering and participating on the programme.

We are now seeking the views of all those involved in supporting cpd opportunities for the children’s workforce.   Please respond using the proforma [WORD 148Kb] by 27 February. Responses should be sent to: nationalpshe@vtplc.com
