Our Certificate of Professional Development for Trainee and Newly Qualified Teachers

Training

The Framework for professional development in PSHE education for trainee and newly qualified teachers supports those new to teaching to develop the basic understanding and skills they require to effectively teach PSHE education. NQTs are often required to deliver PSHE upon taking up their first teaching post and most teachers will be required to teach PSHE education at some point in their careers. Successfully completing the professional development framework and achieving the Certificate of professional development in PSHE education for trainee and newly qualified teachers leaves trainee teachers and NQTs feeling better prepared and confident to teach PSHE education, as well as highlighting their commitment to best practice to potential or current employers.

Recently updated for trainee teachers/NQTs to use in partnership with a university tutor or school-based mentor, the framework explains the key understanding and competences trainee teachers should acquire and demonstrate, prior to teaching PSHE education. The 2019 version of the certificate framework is still valid for the 2020-2021 academic year and is available upon request.

The framework provides a mechanism for tutors and mentors to assess whether their trainee teachers/NQTs have evidenced the key understanding and competences required for PSHE teaching. All successful participants will receive the Certificate of professional development in PSHE education for trainees and newly qualified teachers, which is awarded by the PSHE Association via their ITE provider/school mentor.

A partner document for tutors/mentors provides further details of the standard expected from those submitting for award of the certificate and should be used to inform ITE provision.

The process is free and is suitable for developing the skills and knowledge of those new to teaching, regardless of phase and discipline. To find out more or to register your interest in the programme please email us.

To download the framework, please scroll down to the “attachment” section on the bottom of this page.

We also offer school-based training, including workshops and lectures for small groups or large cohorts of trainee teachers, or tutors/mentors. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
