Careers education lesson plans & resources, years 9-10

Opportunities, strengths and managing online presence

The landscape for employment and enterprise is forever evolving and there have been considerable changes in the past year alone. Use our new lesson plans to help young people to negotiate, and make the most of, this challenging environment.

The lessons also support schools to meet statutory RSHE requirements to teach about young people’s rights, responsibilities and opportunities online — including expectations of behaviour — in a safe and effective way.

Two lesson plans and PowerPoints for year 9 and 10 students are included alongside supporting classroom materials to ensure effective lesson delivery. The lessons will help students to:

  • Explore strategies for showcasing strengths online and how this can create a positive impression to future employers
  • Identify career opportunities online and evaluate their associated benefits and challenges
  • Evaluate the benefits and challenges of maintaining a positive online presence

PSHE Association Subject Specialist Bethan Miller says:
“These lessons provide a range of interactive activities to help students explore the relationship between social media, personal strengths and opportunities for future employment, and enterprise or education. Students have the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches to showcasing personal strengths online and consider the thought process of employers during the hiring process. The lessons are designed to be taught as part of a spiral PSHE education curriculum and could be embedded within a unit of work on digital literacy or employment skills and careers.”
