Coram Life Education: The Belonging Toolkit, KS2-3
The Belonging Toolkit — co-produced with Coram Life Education and Coram's Young Citizens (funded as part of the HALO programme by The Queen's Trust) — gives invaluable insight into the issues facing migrant children and young people today. It is free to download and includes lesson plans, teachers' guidance, films and activities for KS2 and KS3, all clearly linked to Learning Opportunities in the PSHE Association programme of Study.
The Toolkit comprises a lesson for upper KS2 (with the option of 2 more lessons which extend the topic) and a KS3 lesson supporting inclusion in schools. All lessons are accompanied by engaging videos that help pupils to explore what 'belonging' means to them.
At upper KS2, pupils learn about:
- Different people’s feelings about what it means to belong
- How they can help themselves in new situations
- How they can help others in new situations — including their interactions and improving the environment
The KS3 lesson will help students to:
- Explain what is meant by the terms ‘refugee’, ‘asylum seeker’, ‘migrant’ and ‘belonging’
- Describe some of the difficulties people may face when they move to a new place
- Recognise bias in media reports and know how to gather further information to gain a more balanced picture
- Suggest ways they could help their school become more welcoming
- Suggest ways they can help someone who is new to their school to feel that they belong

PSHE Association Subject Specialist Karen Summers says:
“We are delighted to award our Quality Mark to Coram Life Education SCARF’s ‘Belonging Toolkit’. The engaging activities and videos in this resource encourage and enable sensitive discussion around the importance of inclusion and empathy towards pupils from migrant backgrounds. Lessons safely explore some of the challenges faced by these pupils as well as developing a shared understanding of the importance of belonging, and optional extension activities provide further opportunities to develop pupils’ learning and understanding of how to make their school a welcoming place for everyone. This resource will make a valuable and high-quality contribution to both primary and secondary schools’ PSHE provision.”
