FGM and forced marriage lesson plans from Freedom Charity

Freedom Charity has produced a series of free FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) and forced marriage lesson plans for pupils aged 10 to 18.

The lesson plans by Freedom Charity have comprehensive background information; clearly outlining key learning objectives and suggesting potential activities to use in lessons. The resource offers an opportunity for schools to consider these issues more widely and how best to support pupils who may be at immediate or future risk.

There are six lesson plans that focus on the following areas;

•    Arranged vs. forced marriage- This lesson focuses on the difference between arranged marriages and forced marriages and how to explore this in the classroom
•    Simulation- Learners consider the role of different people who might have a connection with forced marriage and dishonour-based violence.
•    Raising awareness- Raising awareness of forced marriages, dishonour-based violence and the work of the charity
•    FGM myths - This lesson plan helps dispel some myths about FGM. The lesson uses a card sort activity followed by a writing task relating to the topic.
•    FGM case study -This lesson plan is based on a case study of a real, lived experience of FGM.
•    FGM Debate - This lesson plan explores arguments surrounding FGM through the medium of debate.

The PSHE Association’s Subject Lead Nick Boddington says:

“The Freedom Charity resource is a very clear and focused approach to two sensitive yet vital subjects and approaches the issues in a balanced, relevant and realistic way. We believe that this resource can form an important part of a planned PSHEe programme.”
