FGM lesson plans for KS3 from Freedom Charity

Key stage 3 resources teaching about female genital mutilation (FGM) produced by Freedom Charity.

The set of three lesson plans and accompanying teacher notes are intended to explore the issues raised in the book 'Cut Flowers' by Aneeta Prem, founder and president of the Freedom Charity.

The first lesson focuses on the nature of FGM and explores who might be vulnerable. The second explores and challenges many of the myths surrounding FGM including the short and long term damage to health. The third explores strategies and develops the skills necessary for protecting our own and others' safety and signposts children and young people to immediate sources of support. As these lessons link closely to the story of 'Cut Flowers' it is intended that children and young people have the opportunity to read the book between lessons one and two.

"Teaching about FGM is one of the most challenging areas of PSHE education. These lessons plans will help pupils to explore the issues in a story which pupils will be able to relate to. Cut Flowers and the accompanying lesson plans offer a route into building this vital topic into schools' planned PSHE education provision in an effective, safe and educationally appropriate way. It will help to build knowledge relating to rights, responsibilities and the boundaries of confidentiality and will help to build key skills and attributes such as critical thinking, judgment and risk management."
