First aid learning for young people by the British Red Cross

First Aid for Learning for Young People, by the British Red Cross, has been designed for 11-19 years olds (key stage 3-5) and aims to give students the confidence, skills and knowledge to help someone in a first aid emergency.

The free resource features 16 first aid skills, which are explored using realistic scenarios relevant to young people. The scenarios look at the perspectives of people who are ill or injured, helpers, or bystanders. Additionally, there is a guidance document which will support teachers to facilitate the learning effectively and a website.

The website contains interactive content such as films, written case studies, photos, animations, role plays and activities. Young people can use the website independently, or engage with first aid learning through teacher facilitated sessions.

PSHE Association Subject Specialist Claire Keech says:
"This toolkit resource, which includes differentiated activities, will give teachers the flexibility to deliver first aid sessions tailored to the needs of their students, within the context of their PSHE education programme. First aid knowledge and skills are taught through engaging films and scenarios, whilst opportunities are provided for young people to reflect on their feelings and attitudes to providing emergency help. Assessment is featured throughout, allowing students to monitor their progress. Relevant to their everyday lives, this programme makes a vital contribution in supporting young people to respond positively, develop strategies to minimise harm and gain confidence to provide first aid in an emergency situation."
