Inclusion, belonging & addressing extremism — KS4

Inclusion, belonging & addressing extremism — KS4

As part of our contribution to the ‘Building a Stronger Britain Together’ initiative, we have revisited a series of lesson plans previously produced by the PSHE Association for Medway Health Directorate. The newly updated key stage 4 materials focus on directly addressing extremism and radicalisation through your PSHE education curriculum.

Schools can build pupils’ resilience to extremism and radicalisation by supporting inclusion and a sense of belonging in the community and by providing a safe environment for debating emotive issues.

As part of a whole school approach, PSHE education lessons can develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of the factors that lead to extremism such as discrimination and intolerance
  • skills such as critically evaluating media and social media content
  • attributes such as resilience, empathy and respect for others

The pack includes a teacher guidance document and each lesson plan is accompanied by a classroom ready PowerPoint and relevant resources.

We thank Medway Public Health Directorate who originally commissioned our secondary phase work, and are grateful for the grant awarded by the London Community Foundation which funded our continued work in this area.

PSHE Association subject specialist Anne Bell says:
“It’s always important to keep resources up to date so lesson materials continue to be relevant for all young people. This lesson pack provides a safe and relevant way to talk about extremism and radicalisation.”
