Information sheet: Addressing FGM in schools

Information sheet on addressing FGM in schools, recognising warning signs and external support.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is any procedure that alters or injures a girl or woman’s genital organs for non-medical reasons. The procedure is illegal in the UK, and it is also illegal to take a British national or permanent resident abroad to perform the procedure. FGM is usually carried out between infancy and 15 years of age, and may affect pupils in your school.

This document has been developed with the support of the Home Office and Department for International Development. It offers guidance on teaching about FGM as part of the PSHE curriculum. Additionally, it aims to raise awareness among staff about the warning signs of female genital mutilation (FGM) and the responsibilities of school staff in this regard. The document also signposts to external sources of help and support for teachers who suspect that a pupil is at risk of FGM.

Please note that the attached presentation on raising awareness is not for use within the classroom, and should be used as guidance and for raising awareness among school staff

UPDATE: The female genital mutilation (FGM) mandatory reporting duty, which requires teachers to report 'known' cases of FGM to the police, has come into force as of 31 October 2015. Guidance for teachers and other professionals is available here.
