Preparing for Statutory Relationships Education: PSHE lead’s pack – key stages 1 and 2

Under the Children and Social Work Act 2017, the government committed to making relationships education (primary) and relationships and sex education (RSE) (secondary) statutory in all schools, including LA maintained schools, academies, free schools and independent schools. All primary schools will soon be required to have relationships education in place and a relationships and sex education policy. 

Education about ‘relationships’ is covered through many aspects of primary PSHE education. Schools should ensure their PSHE programme includes all elements of the new statutory guidance for relationships education which we expect to be published for consultation in Summer 2018.

Elements of sex education that are not included in the statutory guidance will remain non-statutory in primary schools but in order to safeguard pupils effectively we strongly recommend that schools provide a comprehensive programme of relationships and sex education as an integral part of th
