Primary Healthy Heroes PSHE education resource from Lancashire County Council

Primary Healthy Heroes PSHE education resource from Lancashire County Council

Healthy Heroes is a key stages 1 and 2 resource covering emotional health and wellbeing, healthy eating and physical activity, with teacher notes, worksheets and classroom resources. The resource now also includes drugs, alcohol and tobacco education.

Primary Healthy Heroes involves a series of challenges that children can undertake towards becoming a Healthy Hero. Work towards achieving each challenge can take place in schools in the context of a planned programme of PSHE education and also at home, where children are encouraged to work with family members to complete each challenge. This is designed to empower both children and their families to make positive behaviour changes in relation to physical and emotional health and wellbeing, food and activity choices and safe and unsafe behaviour.

The pack consists of a range of classroom resources including 24 challenge cards, each with teacher notes that form the basis of lessons. The accompanying teacher notes suggest various interactive activities to use in class to support each challenge.

The PSHE Association says:

"This is an engaging and interactive resource which supports many aspects of primary PSHE provision related to healthy eating, emotional health and wellbeing, physical activity and making choices about safe and unsafe behaviour.

This resource provides a wealth of opportunities for pupils to recognise and reflect on the relevance of their learning and how it can be applied in their own lives.

The resource supports the setting and achievement of challenging personal goals, an essential PSHE education interpersonal and self-management skill, while also supporting the ‘Health and Wellbeing’ and ‘Living in the wider world’ aspects of the PSHE Association Programme of Study for PSHE education. This includes supporting an understanding of what is meant by a healthy lifestyle; ways of keeping physically and emotionally safe; how to make informed choices about health and wellbeing; understanding different influences on health and wellbeing, rights and responsibilities as members of families, other groups and as citizens and the importance of respecting and taking care of the environment."
