Tackling Homelessness lessons for key stage 4 by Cumbria Council

Cumbria County Council’s Youth Homelessness and Housing team have produced two lessons with accompanying PowerPoint slides to support teachers in reducing the risk of homelessness. This work has been made possible through funding from the Cumbria Office of Police and Crime Commissioner’s Innovation Fund.

The lessons came directly from work completed in Cumbria but have been written in such a way that teachers across the country can use the materials with minimal adaptation for their region.

Aimed at key stage 4 students, the lessons support young people to engage with the realities of independent living in order to enable them to seek support before leaving home without a secure place to stay. The resources can be used to challenge myths about homelessness and to create discussion around managing family tensions.

The lessons also include differentiated activities on budgeting for independent living which is a topic of increasing relevance to all young people.

PSHE Association Subject Specialist Anne Bell comments that:

“These lessons provide an ideal way to open up conversations around homelessness. The focus on signposting support provides a helpful way to safeguard vulnerable young people.”
